Bring in feedback you already have

Put reviews, support e-mails and form exports into a general source by pasting, importing a file or sending them through the API, and see how their dates decide where they are counted.

Bring in feedback you already have

A survey collects new answers. A general source holds feedback you already have somewhere else: reviews, support e-mails, chat transcripts, a form export. Each piece of feedback becomes one item of the source. Items are analyzed like open-text survey answers, and the insights of a project are counted over all of its sources together, with verbatim quotes from each.

Create a general source

  1. Open Sources and click Add source, then General source.
  2. Enter a Name. It is shown on the sources list and next to every quote from this source.
  3. Under What is this feedback?, write one sentence, for example "E-mails from people who contacted support in September". The analysis reads it as the context for every item, the way it reads a survey question.
  4. Click Create source.

You can change the name and the sentence later on the source's Settings tab. A changed sentence applies from the next count.

Three ways to add items

WayBest for
Paste text, on the source's tab of the same nameA batch you copy from an inbox or a document
Import a fileAn export from Google Play, Typeform, Tally, Google Forms, Google reviews, or your own spreadsheet
Send through the APINew feedback as it arrives, from n8n, Zapier, Make or your own code

All three run the same checks on every item. A bad item is skipped and listed with the reason; the rest are saved:

  • an empty text is skipped,
  • a text longer than 10,000 characters is skipped,
  • a date that can't be read is skipped,
  • a date in the future is skipped.

Pasting text

Paste the feedback into Feedback and leave a blank line between two pieces: each block becomes one item. Date of the feedback is optional and applies to every item in the paste; leave it empty to use today. Preview shows how many items the paste makes and how many analyzed answers (AO) they use, before you click Add items.

Dates decide where an item is counted

An item belongs to the period of its own date, not of the day you added it.

  • Dates are read in UTC. A date with a time zone is converted; a date without one is read as UTC.
  • No date means the moment the item was received.
  • This month's items are counted together with your new responses.
  • Earlier periods don't change on their own. If an item falls into a month or a week that was already counted, it won't appear there until you recompute that period. After adding items, RawQuotes lists those periods with how many items each one got.

The accepted date formats are on Import a file.

What counts toward your plan

Every accepted item counts as one response toward this month's responses limit, whatever its date. A paste, import or API request that would take you past that limit is refused as a whole and nothing is saved. There is also a cap on how many items one paste, import or request can carry, rejected ones included; going over it refuses the whole request too. The numbers for each plan are in Plans and billing.

Adding items uses no AO by itself. Items use AO when insights are counted over them, by the length of their text, as described in What one AO is.

Where the items show up

  • On the source's Answers tab, and on Responses with the Source filter.
  • In the project's insights, as quotes next to the answers from your surveys.

Removing items

An import can't be undone as one step. You can delete a single item from the Answers tab, or delete the whole source on its Settings tab under Delete this source. Deleting a source removes every item in it and every insight quote taken from them, and can't be undone.
